Use HK channel / HK news channel with VPN

Guide

For users located abroad, connecting to a VPN server is the crucial key step to access geo-blocked content on HK channel / HK news channel.

The following guide focuses on native VPN apps on tvOS 17 (or later), breaking down every operational detail from login to server selection:

Phase 1: First-Time VPN App Launch & Authorization

After downloading your subscribed VPN (such as ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, ProtonVPN, etc.) from the Apple TV App Store:

  1. Quick Login (Avoid typing with the remote):
  • Open the VPN app on your Apple TV.
  • Most VPNs now support QR code or code login. The screen will display a QR code or a 6-digit verification code. You can scan it with your phone or enter the code on a computer to log in instantly.
  1. Grant tvOS System VPN Permissions:
  • After logging in, the first time you initiate a connection, Apple TV will display a system prompt: “Allow VPN Configurations”.
  • Select “Allow” using your remote. The system will automatically build the underlying tvOS encryption tunnel (this step only needs to be done once).

Phase 2: Precisely Select a Hong Kong (HK) Server

Critical Warning: Never click “Quick Connect”! Doing so will only connect you to your current location (e.g. the UK).

1. Manually Open the Country List: Server Menu.

In the main VPN screen, locate “All Locations” or “Servers” and find Hong Kong.

2. Expand Hong Kong Cities/Nodes: Node Selection.

Click the arrow or three-dot menu next to Hong Kong. Do not just select the main “HK” category, choose a specific city server instead:

  • Primary Choice: Hong Kong
  • Secondary Choice: Central, Kowloon or New Territories

3. Set VPN Protocol (Optional but Recommended): Protocol Settings.

Go to Settings > Protocol within the VPN app and manually switch to:

  • NordVPN: Choose NordLynx
  • ExpressVPN: Choose Lightway - UDP
  • Surfshark / Others: Choose WireGuard
  • (WireGuard-based protocols offer the fastest speeds and most stable connections, preventing stuttering during 4K streaming.)

Phase 3: Connect and Verify

  1. Click your selected Hong Kong server (e.g. HK - Central) to connect.
  2. When the screen displays “Connected” and the toggle turns green/blue, all Apple TV network traffic has successfully routed to a Hong Kong IP.
  3. Verification: Press and hold the TV Button on your remote to open the Control Center on the right side. A small “VPN” icon will typically appear near the top right corner, indicating that the VPN is running in the background.

Troubleshooting & Unblocking Guide for HK channel / HK news channel

1. Force Close the HK channel / HK news channel App: The app may remember your previous IP address prior to connecting to a new VPN server.

  • Double-press the TV Button on your remote to enter the App Switcher.
  • Swipe up on the HK channel / HK news channel app to force close it completely.

2. Switch Hong Kong Nodes: Open the VPN app and switch the server from Central 1 to Central 2 or Kowloon. Trying 2–3 different nodes usually bypasses geo-restrictions successfully.

3. Disable Apple Special Location Settings (If enabled): Go to Apple TV Settings > System > Location Services and ensure it does not interfere with the VPN’s IP detection.
